Could we soon be seeing an end to the toxic chemicals used in our favorite makeup products? Yes, that may just be the case, if the bill that was reportedly brought before the Senate yesterday gets voted into law.

According to NY MAGAZINE, The Cut, this bill known as the Personal Care Products Safety Act, was first introduced by Senators Susan Collins and Dianne Feinstein in April 2015, with the intention of having the FDA, enforce stricter rules on what chemicals can be used in makeup products. This bill, is the first attempt made  in 80 years , in  trying to get our cosmetic products regulated , according to Yahoo Beauty. As of right now, the current law that’s in placed, does not require cosmetic products and ingredients, other than color additives, to have FDA approval before they go on the market.

The FDA wrote on their website that “neither the law nor FDA regulations require specific tests to demonstrate the safety of individual products or ingredients.”

There is an  exception to that rule though. Under the FD&C Act, cosmetics that are on the market in the  interstate commerce, are prohibited from being misbranded, which includes, false labeling, or the omission of “the name and address of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor, and the net quantity of contents,” in the product, as noted by the FDA.

So according to The Cut, if this new bill does get approved, the Personal Care Products Safety Act, would:

Require that the labels of professional salon products and online cosmetic products fully disclose the ingredients used.

Mandate that companies  follow good manufacturing practices

Give the FDA the authority to recall unsafe products off the shelves

Direct the FDA to assess the safety of a minimum of five cosmetics chemicals a year

And require companies to register their facilities, products and ingredients with the FDA

It’s only a matter time before we receive the news if whether this new bill gets approved or not. I hope it does, because the health of our skins should be a priority, especially since toxic chemicals like Mineral Oil, also known as Liquidum paraffinum, Paraffin oil, Paraffin wax and Petrolatum,  are widely used especially in almost all of our favorite foundations, powders, eye products and  lotion products.

For those who are unaware of what Mineral Oil is and the affect that it can have on you as a consumer… it can clog your pores, block the excretion of sweat and other toxics from being eliminated from your skins, as well as hinder skin cell rejuvenation according to http://www.oilsofyouth.com/.

The same source cites there is a huge likely hood that all mineral oil “derivatives are  contaminated with cancer causing PAH’s (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons). Motor oil is now labeled in California as a carcinogen, and they warn against any skin contact. Mineral oil comes from the same crude oil source.”
