The jury found Wright guilty in 2003 after placing her daughter Ashley Smith in an oven at her home in Elmore Country, according to http://www.people.com/.

Evidence had proved that Wright had removed the racks out of the oven, turned it to broil and waited for it to heat up and then put her head first into that oven,” Houston said at the hearing, according to NBC affiliate WSFA.

It is unknown how long Smith was in there before her father had taken her out of the oven.

Smith suffered from severe burn marks and has since undergone 28 surgeries, according to http://www.people.com/. After that incident, she was placed in the home of  her aunt, who she still lives with today and considers as her mother.

Before the parole was denied, Smith had released a statement where she begged the court to keep her mother in jail, keeping in mind the welfare of her 27 month old nephew and 8 year old niece.

In a statement obtained by Montgomery Advertiser, she said “They are about the same ages as me and Courtney when this happened. I honestly do not trust her and I’m afraid for their safety. I can’t imagine anybody being in as much pain as I was in. And now I have a great life thanks to my mom, stepdad and brothers and sisters,” according to http://www.people.com.

Smith’s sister on the other hand believed that her mother ( who had been mentally ill then) has changed over the years and requested that her mother be released out of jail.

“I was only 8-years-old when it happened, she was different,” Brunson said, according to WSFA. “I saw what happened. I know how she was. She was not herself.” – Quoted from http://www.people.com/

Ashley Smith wasn’t the only one that was relieved when the court announced that Melissa Wright will continue serving her 25 year sentence,  Elmore County District Attorney Randall Houston was as well.

He cited  how proud he was of Smith for speaking up in the courtroom, fighting for what she thought was the right thing to do for herself and the welfare of her family.
